How to overcome Anxiety

Looking for anxiety treatment in Dubai or Abu Dhabi?

If you find yourself feeling increasingly anxious, you may be seeking ways to overcome anxiety.

First, you need to know anxiety is a normal and often healthy emotion. However, when a person regularly feels disproportionate anxiety levels, it might become a medical disorder.

What is considered 'normal' and what is not?

Since the earliest days of humanity, the approach of predators and incoming danger sets off alarms in the body and allows evasive action. These alarms become noticeable through a raised heartbeat, sweating, and increased sensitivity to surroundings.

While these symptoms might be normal to experience in daily life, people with GAD (generalized anxiety disorder) will experience them at persistent or extreme levels. GAD may present as vague, unsettling worry or more severe anxiety that disrupts day-to-day living.

Mental symptoms

  • Feeling panic, fear, and uneasiness.
  • Nightmares.
  • Repeated thoughts or flashbacks of traumatic experiences.
  • Uncontrollable, obsessive thoughts.

Physical symptoms of anxiety

  • Cold or sweaty hands.
  • Dry mouth
  • Heart palpitations.
  • Nausea
  • Numbness or tingling in hands or feet.
  • Muscle tension.
  • Shortness of breath

Behavioral symptoms

  • Inability to be still and calm.
  • Ritualistic behaviors, such as washing hands repeatedly.
  • Trouble sleeping.

What are the types of anxiety disorders?

There are several types of anxiety disorders, including:

  • Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) (extreme feeling of unrealistic worry and tension)
  • Panic disorder (feelings of terror start suddenly or from a trigger, like facing a situation you dread)
  • Phobias (intense fear of certain situations or objects)
  • Social anxiety disorder (overwhelming worry and self-consciousness about judgement and embarrassment)

What causes anxiety disorders?

Researchers don’t know exactly what causes anxiety disorders. They suspect a combination of factors plays a role:

  • Chemical imbalance: Severe or long-lasting stress can change the chemical balance that controls your mood. Experiencing much stress over a long period can lead to an anxiety disorder.
  • Environmental factors: Experiencing a trauma might trigger an anxiety disorder, especially in someone who has inherited a higher risk.
  • Heredity: Anxiety disorders tend to run in families. You may inherit them from one or both parents, like eye color.

Does an anxiety disorder need treatment?

YES!

An anxiety disorder is like any other health problem that requires treatment.

YOU CAN'T WILL IT AWAY.

It’s not a matter of self-discipline or attitude.

How does medication treat anxiety disorders?

Medications can’t cure an anxiety disorder. But they can improve symptoms and help you function better. Only a healthcare provider can support you in finding the right medication combination and dosage. They’ll monitor you to ensure the medicines work and limit adverse side effects. You don’t need to face anxiety alone! Be courageous and seek out support.
